The effects of the sun: how to protect the skin properly?

When the beautiful season arrives, we do not resist the temptation to take a little sun and leave behind the colorful off of the winter months.

Exposing us to the light of the sun affects the release of endorphins and serotonin, contributing to our psychophysical well-being. The light of the sun also stimulates the production of vitamin D, very important for bones and the prevention of osteoporosis.

However, it is important to know that solar rays do not only bring benefits but can also be harmful to the skin. With due attention, you can still get a perfect tan without risk for our health.

First of all, we try to make some clarity about sunlight.

The sun is able to generate different electromagnetic radiations that reach the surface more or less powerful. Among these types of radiation, the most relevant ones are ultraviolet rays. Despite this type of radiation, the atmosphere is less open, UV rays are responsible for tanning and the greatest risks to our skin.

Based on their wavelength, it is possible to distinguish between 3 different types of UV rays:

  1. UV rays: These radiations have the greater wavelength and penetrate deeper into the skin.
  2. UVB ray: average wavelength. They only reach the epidermal layer and are responsible for tanning.
  3. UVC rays: Despite potentially the most dangerous, they are retained by the ozone and therefore do not reach the Earth’s surface.

Excessive and not adequately protected exposure to these rays entails serious risks to the skin that can meet burns, erythema, premature photo-aging and even more serious problems including cancer.

Shots and erythys are mainly due to UVB rays and affect the most superficial layer of the skin. In addition to the characteristic symptoms of redness, burning and itching, they contribute to the formation of skin spots.

Premature aging of the skin is mainly caused by UVA rays that, penetrating deeper, generate free radicals and can significantly damage the collagen and elastin present in the skin, bringing in the long term an important skin damage. The skin will appear dry, thinner and you will rediscover loss of elasticity and appearance of obvious wrinkles.

With regard to skin cancer, it was unfortunately found that excessive and uncontrolled exposure to the sun, without the necessary protections, increases the chances of developing the disease.

Harmful Rays for Skin

To enjoy the benefits of the sun without risk and without harm, it is very important to follow some measures that will allow us to obtain a tan in complete safety:

Protecting the skin, even if already tanned, is absolutely essential.

You should never forget to put on a cream that protects the skin from sunlight by carefully choosing, according to the characteristics of your skin, the type of protection that guarantees.

Another important element is to apply the product several times a day, especially after wet or sweat. Even the waterproof or water resistant suns, in fact, resist the water but it is still advisable a new application in case of prolonged baths.

2. Take the sun in small doses

Gently wears skin to sunlight.

3. Avoid the hottest hours of the day

When solar rays strike with greater intensity and are, consequently, more dangerous to the skin. It is preferable to expose in the sun in the morning or in the late afternoon.

4. Always apply a sunbed

After a day under the sun, it is strongly recommended to apply a cream or after-sun lotion that, in addition to making the tan last longer, returns the right level of hydration to the skin and soothes any redness.
